The
Brunswick Islands are made up of
a group of narrow, barrier islands in the southeastern corner
of North Carolina, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the
Intracoastal Waterway. The area includes over fifty miles of coastline,
including some of the finest beaches on the east coast. Because
of its temperate climate, the area offers just about any coastal
outdoor recreation activity imaginable, year round.
Located
between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, the area is close enough
to city amenities and activities, while far enough away to offer
real laid-back living.

Communities
Brunswick
County, with approximately 100,000 residents, is made up of eighteen
incorporated towns and over sixty other small towns and communities.
Shallotte, the county seat, has a population of about 1,500. The
area known as the "Brunswick Islands" primarily consists
of Bald Head Island, Southport, Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean
Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, Calabash and, of course, Shallotte.
The
Brunswick Islands area is a most popular destination for new residents,
and many communities have been developed throughout the county,
providing golf, water and other recreational activities for their
residents. The beaches are very popular summer vacation spots,
while providing a laid-back coastal atmosphere for families and

The
Brunswick County public school system, with a student population
exceeding 11,000, includes seventeen schools, and
has a student / teacher ratio of approximately 15:1. In addition
to the public school system, there are many fine private schools
in Brunswick and surrounding counties with grade offerings from
pre-kindergarten through high school.
Brunswick
Community College, located just north of Shallotte on Highway
17, offers over forty degree, diploma and certificate programs,
as well as many continuing education opportunities for those desiring
to extend their horizons. And only a short distance away is the
University of North Carolina - Wilmington. UNCW offers bachelor's
degrees in 52 majors, 35 master's degrees, and doctorate degrees

Brunswick
Islands and Brunswick County are served by the Brunswick Community
Hospital, an acute care hospital located on Highway 17 in the
heart of Brunswick County. With a staff of nearly 100 physicians
and specialists, 400 employees and 75 volunteers, BCH offers a
full range of healthcare services and is accredited by the Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Dosher
Memorial Hospital, located in Southport, is a 100-bed community
hospital with 36 licensed acute (inpatient) beds and 64 licensed
skilled nursing center beds. Services provided include cardiopulmonary
and respiratory therapy and rehabilitation, general surgery and
emergency care.
New
Hanover Regional Medical Center, a not-for-profit health care
system serving southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South
Carolina is located in Wilmington. NHRM is a teaching hospital,
regional referral center, and Level 2 Trauma Center, and provides
a wide range of health care services ranging including cancer,
heart and neurosurgical care. Grand Strand Regional Medical Center,
in Myrtle Beach, is the only cardiac surgery program in Horry
County and is also a designated trauma center.For more information

Arts &
Culture
The
Brunswick Arts Council, founded in 1981, was formed to inspire
and promote appreciation, education, participation
and support for a broad range of arts and cultural interests for
the benefit of Brunswick County's artists and art related organizations,
students and the community at large. BAC hosts many visual, literary
and performing arts programs throughout the year, for both children
and adults. Venues such as the Odell Williamson Memorial Auditorium
at Brunswick Community College and the Brunswick Little Theatre
host some of the finest live concerts, plays and performances
in the state.

Wilmington is the home of some of the finest performing arts,
visual arts and museums offerings in the state, including many
fine cultural opportunities that exist through the University
